At ACS, we’re dedicated to investing in new talent and welcoming new people into our team. That is why we’re committed to our Apprenticeship Scheme, which offers Professional Development and Continuous Learning to individuals who exhibit a passion for construction.

In 2023, we recruited more apprentices than ever before in recognition of the role it plays in not only shaping our own business, but the future of the sector at large. A year on from our 2023 intake, we catch up with two of our apprentices to hear about their experiences at ACS so far.

Pedro Gola is our second ever youngest apprentice, joining us last year at just age 16.

“I feel like I’ve improved as a person”

I used to drive past ACS and wonder what it was like as I live fairly nearby – I can’t believe I’m now working here! I’ve always loved technology and computers – anything to do with phones, new tech – smart watches etc so discovering the technical CAD side of the business was a revelation – it literally combines my love of computers with a desire to be creative.

The great thing about being an apprentice here is that you rotate through all the departments. Research and Development has been a particular highlight for me and I’m incredibly grateful to my mentor, Andrew Spencer who helped me considerably, not just at work but personally too.

A project I did here has been the highlight of my apprenticeship so far. I was entrusted with redeveloping a product – the Insulation Retention Clip (IRC) to make sure the new shape and design was compatible with all of ACS’s existing wall ties. It really expanded my skills and knowledge and I felt really trusted and valuable in the process.

A rising star

The work on this product earned me a nomination at the Leeds Manufacturing Festival for Rising Star. I couldn’t believe it and am so grateful I have been given an opportunity like this straight from Secondary school. It’s been the first chance I’ve ever had to stand out and be trusted with something so important.

Working in a professional environment for the first time has been a big learning curve, it’s made me more independent as a person and improved my social skills as well helping me mature. I feel more confident speaking, asking for help and overall I really feel like I’ve improved as a person.

ACS is amazing, the opportunities, the people… it’s been a direct path into adulthood and has helped to cement my goals for the future which is to take a degree in Technical Architecture.

I’m looking forward to learning more in my second year and getting to know the departments even more.
